In September 2022, News24 reported that four South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members—Lieutenant Dimakatso Modise, Lieutenant-Colonel Vivian Seadimo Peu, Captain Mbomolelo Avroline Tshikosi, and Leading Seaman Suzen Jiane—appeared in military court on allegations of PPE fraud and corruption amounting to R273 million. The SIU found that the value of irregularities in contracts far outweighed those conducted correctly. No irregularities were found in 2,010 contracts valued at R6.7 billion, but irregularities were identified in 2,965 contracts, with a staggering value of R8.9 billion. Additionally, 85 contracts valued at R174,951 were found to be out of scope, meaning they did not fall within the established parameters of the procurement projects.
